08/25/2010 SPANISH TOPICS August -September 2010
Welcome back to school!
We will begin by getting to know each other with an introduction to Spanish greetings. Each student will have an opportunity to pick a Spanish name to use during class. We will review where in the world Spanish is spoken and touch on some cultural and regional differences in the Spanish dialect.
Key vocabulary will include the words for classroom objects, numbers, colors, and the letters of the alphabet. Students will have a chance to learn through music, movement, and art. An after school club will be offered beginning in September.

08/25/2010 September Topics in Art Class
Grade 3: color families, line design, introduce facial proportions, self portrait
Grade 4: shape design, layout of the color wheel, review facial proportions, self portrait
Grade 5: monochromatic color scheme, changing a value of color by adding black, white or gray, planning a portrait, self portrait in one color
Grade 6: adjacent colors on the color wheel, portrait, self portrait using only adjacent colors,
All students will begin the year reviewing types of art and materials (various media). Each student will keep an art folder in the room and it may be used for sketching assignments and when assigned work is done. I like to encourage sketching and making of art trading cards when other work is finished. I hope to inspire all students to do their best work and to encourage each other in our artistic efforts. Last year we tried to emphasize sources that inspire artists. We will continue with that idea as well as introducing artistic collaboration. We want to find ways that we can better work together to design art that is shared or worked on by more than one artist. We will do this in many ways. We may make suggestions to each other as we work and even offer advice to other artists when they are in the finishing stages of a project. It would be nice to collaborate to the extent that more than one person could be involved in the same art piece. In the month of September we hope to connect all the self portraits to create one large mural for our school.
